Why Reading was Integrated to STEAM?

The S.T.R.E.A.M. learning approach is certainly a progressive learning model compared to STEM and STEAM. From STEAM, which stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Maths, policymakers and educators integrated reading into it and transformed the method into S.T.R.E.A.M..

In essence, both STEM and STEAM educations were intended to equip students with constructive skills for their daily lives. However, the undeniable challenge lies in how fast and smoothly students can digest information from STEM subjects before they can proceed to hands-on learning experience through art skills implementation.

As reading is naturally a fundamental and indispensable part of any type of academic and education method, it is safe to say that integrating reading in STEAM was essential. And, it is what fine-tuned the S.T.R.E.A.M. education as a recent model of learning that suited the world’s current evolution.

It is because the reading process bridges the coordination of other subjects in S.T.R.E.A.M. that improves students’ understanding capability and engagement throughout the learning activity.

Through reading, students will better and more easily understand complex concepts or instructions usually found in science, technology, engineering, arts, and maths.

‘R’ in S.T.R.E.A.M.: Where Reading is The Learning Catalyst

First and foremost, the S.T.R.E.A.M. learning model carries out an interdisciplinary approach to provide subjects to students. It aims to develop and promote students’ skills in analytical, creative, and problem-solving skills, a core skills for any well-being.

Correspondingly, students need to build a solid understanding of those various subjects to be able to demonstrate them in their daily lives from now on to the future. Reading as a learning element plays a crucial role in helping them develop that level of understanding and comprehension.

By practising reading from an early age, students can already build the aforementioned core skills. It enhances focus, hence they can grasp and digest information faster and comprehend the message better.

Not to mention that reading also trains students to express themselves in a proportional manner, which is necessary to support their creativity and improve their engagement and participation in the learning process. It might not look like it, but these capacities also increase interpersonal skills.

How Reading Promotes STEAM Learning

A famous American writer and illustrator, Tomie de Paola, once said: “Reading is important because if you can read, you can learn anything about everything and everything about anything.”

That is a practical concept of how reading supports the interdisciplinary learning of STEAM. Through reading, students will enrich their vocabulary and enhance their literacy skills, including critical thinking competency.

These literacy skills will help them decipher the concepts and heavier content materials of STEAM, preparing them to engage better and increase their proficiency in STEAM subjects.
