At BINUS SCHOOL Surabaya, we implement personalised learning to increase both student and teacher engagement, enhance learning, and for students to achieve their full potential. Personalised learning is one of our main features, as we strongly believe that all students have different strengths, interests, needs, and aspirations.
In implementing personalised learning, we promote student agency. We foster student voice, choice, and ownership of their learning. At our school, personalised learning is guided by five principles: knowing our students, understanding our curriculum, applying a variety of effective strategies, keeping learning social, and connecting learning to real life.
Our student-centered framework is rooted in the BINUS vision of “fostering and empowering society in building and serving the nation”. We firmly believe that nurturing every student’s potential is one way of giving back to society and education is not a one-size-fits all approach. In line with our vision, we recognize our students as competent creators, problem-solvers, and changemakers.
Various ways of implementing personalised learning at BINUS SCHOOL Surabaya include offering S.T.R.E.A.M.S (Science, Technology, Reading, Engineering, Arts, Mathematics, and Sports), wherein students engage in inquiry, issues of global significance, and real-world applications. By incorporating S.T.R.E.A.M.S., we create meaningful experiences for students that celebrate and address diversity in learning.
Aside from S.T.R.E.A.M.S, our students set and reflect on their goals. Goal-setting empowers our students to make choices, monitor their growth, and adjust their learning. Reflection is an important part of our practices, and our students take an active role in shaping their experiences.
In addition, our students engage in co-curricular activities and passion projects of their choice – whether it is creating artwork, playing sports or musical instruments, learning other languages, designing games, or getting involved in community initiatives. By encouraging our students to pursue their passions, we explicitly teach them different approaches to learning such as research skills, social skills, and thinking skills. To support personalised learning, our students also have access to purpose-built learning spaces for independent or group work.
Strengthening the implementation of personalised learning is our commitment to digital excellence. We integrate technology in our daily learning and teaching practices. Students are taught to use technology responsibly. Digital excellence at our school is beyond devices. It is about empowering our students to succeed in a technology-driven world.
