Students Turn the Local Market into a Classroom

As part of the Unit of Inquiry, How We Organise Ourselves, our Primary 3 students recently took part in an exciting community field trip to Pasar Modern Citraland. This visit allowed our young learners to explore how human made systems, such as marketplaces, transportation, and services, work together to support a vibrant community.

Discovering How Systems Work

During the visit, students became active observers of the world around them. They looked closely at how different stalls operate and saw firsthand how goods are transported and organised efficiently to meet the needs of customers. By engaging with the local market, the students explored:

  • Diverse roles: identifying the various people who make a marketplace function, from sellers to logistics providers.
  • Social interaction: practising how to interact politely and respectfully with sellers in a busy environment.
  • Financial literacy: comparing prices and practising how to handle money independently during real transactions.

Beyond the Classroom Walls

This experience provided a rich opportunity for Primary 3 students to apply their classroom learning to a real life setting. Beyond the academic focus on systems, the trip helped them develop essential life skills, including:

  • Communication: building the confidence to ask questions and express needs in a public space.
  • Global mindedness: developing a deeper appreciation for their local community and the people who support it.
  • Self management: navigating a public market responsibly and staying focused on their inquiry goals.

Meaningful Learning in Action

The trip to Pasar Modern Citraland reinforced the idea that the most profound lessons often happen through direct engagement with the world. By connecting with their local community, our students gained valuable knowledge and a deeper understanding of the complex systems that shape our daily lives.
