Sungai Harapan Project: BINUS SCHOOL Students Champion a Cleaner, Greener Future

River pollution is an escalating problem as waste continues to clog waterways, causing serious harm to the environment. Many still throw rubbish into rivers without considering the lasting damage it causes. This careless practice not only contaminates water but also increases the risk of flooding, produces foul smells, and endangers aquatic life. Rivers are vital for sustaining ecosystems and providing water to communities, yet they are often treated like open trash bins. If left unchecked, this problem could lead to severe consequences for both nature and human health.

One example is the river in Permata Hijau, South Jakarta, where years of waste build-up have disrupted the natural flow and damaged the surrounding ecosystem. Plastic debris, floating trash, and other pollutants have transformed it into an unhealthy and unpleasant sight. This pollution also affects nearby residents, as contaminated water can spread disease and worsen sanitation conditions. Realising the urgency, students from BINUS SCHOOL Simprug launched the Sungai Harapan project, installing a trash barrier to capture waste before it travels downstream. Their mission is to cut pollution, improve water quality, and raise public awareness about environmental care.

The trash barrier traps floating rubbish, making clean-up easier and helping restore the river’s flow and health. Yet, the initiative is about more than just cleaning, it’s a tool for education and advocacy. The students hope their actions will inspire others to take greater responsibility in waste management. They believe that small, consistent changes, like disposing of rubbish correctly and reducing plastic consumption, can make a big difference.

This project reflects BINUS SCHOOL’s broader goal of empowering students to create positive change in their communities. Participants are developing teamwork, leadership, and a sense of social responsibility. Their work not only benefits one river but also sets an example for others to follow. Since river pollution is a shared problem, community participation is essential. Projects like Sungai Harapan prove that even small-scale actions can spark significant impact.

Addressing river pollution requires collective action from individuals, communities, and authorities. While efforts like the Permata Hijau trash barrier mark a promising start, lasting results demand long-term commitment. Governments and environmental groups must work together to enforce stricter waste regulations and promote sustainable habits. At the same time, individuals can help by using less plastic, disposing of waste properly, and joining clean-up events.

With sustained effort and heightened awareness, polluted rivers can be revived, paving the way for a cleaner, healthier environment. Every contribution matters, together, society can protect precious natural resources for generations to come.
